It depends. You have to consider the client's motivation and capability as well as the intended goal. Metaphors will retrieve experience. If you have a needing to greive client who begins crying in the midst of a story...the story is superfluous -- the sadness and grief are what you "process"...but that means support and encouragement and not analysis and talk, of course.
