Okay, that extra info is a bit more helpful. His age and origin are necessary for your better understanding of the norms and expectation he internalized. Also, the status of and communication within this relation (the observed one, not just what is reported) is important. Why? Well, assuming that this recent 'symptom' is developing due to his stress and his suggestibility makes some sense. However, these and other factors might contribute to the stress, or be a source of support from the stress need to be assessed. Remember that you don't have to figure out the meaning by yourself. You can ask him to speculate on the function and meaning of the presenting 'symptom' both out of trance and in trance. Further diagnosis can be also aided by the use of confabulated stories of the lives of children and adults who became displaced, discredited, and disappointed in various ways. Such stories may help him put shape and words to his current troubles.

Seeing him with is wife would also be advisable to help glean the degree of trouble he now has.

I personally would have to wait until I understood it (at least to my satisfaction) before I did more specific treatment.
