Hi Brian, I am sorry if you feel that ur question got very sidetracked, because it was not my intention at all :-)).
I have sometimes problems with written English when its becomes theorical since it's my third language and I also have trouble writing. I speak and communicate a lot better in oral mode.I just saw an analogy which could be have been useful for the sake of the exchange and I am happy that Steve answered your query in the direction u were expecting, and in a mode that you are more used to.
I equally appreciated his answer as well, provided that, although I am not a councelor, but a psych nurse included in the treatment team of my hospital, I can see a useful application in trying to convince my psychiatrists collegues in hiring an hypnotherapist in our team; This explanation is also more palatable as Steve points out, to westerner practitioners used to the paradigm "I see, I touch , I touch , I measure, I demonstrate, therefore I believe and I can heal". But this brings us to another paradigm, which I believe would be off topic: The etnocentrism and the imperialistic view of modern psychiatry and medicine towards the rest of our living earth(fauna, flora, beings etc..).
Yours
Ginny
