Dan, there are quite a few books on the topic. The primo one, about its realationship and correspondence to change, larger systems, etc., has NOT been written.

Here is a good test with plenty of useful knowledge to share: NEURAL NETWORKS: A COMPREHENSIVE FOUNDATION (Haykin, Macmillan, 1994).

There are many good web sites too. Here are a couple:
    1) http://ai.about.com/compute/ai/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dacs.dtic.mil%2Ftechs%2Fneural%2Fneural_ToC.html

    2) http://www.digitalbiology.com/contents/example1.html (and the partent site, too, of course)

    3) On a related topic this: http://www.muc.de/~heuvel/bohm/

references of physicist David Bohm and his works my be of interest to you as well.

    Steve
