I think that what needs to be clarified, or what people need to know, is that EMDR is only one method/technique that can be used in therapy. It is not the EMDR per se that takes a number of years but the therapy the person is undertaking. I would have great reluctance to be in long-term therapy if the only approach the therapist used was EMDR. My therapist utilizes a variety of methods, EMDR being one of them, and we work together to decide on how to proceed. I would not be able to do EMDR per se on a weekly basis over a long period of time and I, personally, don't believe that this would be a good therapeutic approach. I'm sure that there are comments in regards to EMDR being used as part of a more comprehensive treatment program elsewhere on this forum. Some people may only need short-term treatment and that treatment may consist primarily of EMDR. Therapists need to clearly tell potential clients that EMDR is just one method/technique that can be used over the course of treatment and give adequate information on other approaches he/she also utilizes.
