Recently I've have talked to a couple of therapist about using emdr/abs for disassociation. I've found it an interesting topic, since so much is said about emdr necessarily or automatically causing associations. And that assumption, of course, underlies the idea that doing emdr is dangerous (or more dangerous) with highly dissociative clients. I'd love Dr. Inobe's input on this.
I've found the abs can be used (and is used by some emdr therapists) to strengthen dissociative barriers. This technique seems to work best when combined with a bit of hypnosis... finding a safe "target" (semi) hypnotically and using abs to install it. Specifically I am thinking of J. Twombly's use of emdr/hypnosis, as well as various tecniques of Watkins, etc.
I'd love Dr. Inobe's input on this.
