I am "excited" about the possibilities of what may be accomplished with EMDR. I have only had my initial conference with an EMDR practioner, but this approach appears to be precisely what I have needed for over 25 years!! Prior therapy was merely counseling that suggested differnet ways that I might deal with the problems that I was having difficulty with. Kinda like telling someone with a serious weight problem that it would be better to refrain from eating so many bon-bons, jelly rolls, ice cream, pizza, & sugar drinks; and to eat more salads, rice cakes & drink a lot of water. Easier said than done without getting to the core problem. I am still very cautious in my expectations as apparently my resistance to therapy is quite high. Nothing seems to penetrate. I am concerned that for EMDR I may need the most experienced therapist, and the one I have chosen has limited experience. She says that we should know after 4 or 5 sessions if EMDR is "right" for me. [not a quote] If EMDR is as effective as so many of the examples that I have read on the Net, why is it such a secret? Why has it not been featured on 20/20 or DATELINE as a revolutionary new therapy? How do the Harvard skeptics ignore the benefits gained by clients who have overcome serious PTSD problems with the help of EMDR? Also, if one does not readily respond to the eye movement sessions, is there an approach to work through such "resistance?"
