Much has been written in Gender theory about the notion of 'copy' in relation to the dynamic that exists between heterosexual and homosexual culture (pre-online community). It has been noted by some theorists that the inscription of Lesbianism or male Homosexuality as 'copy' might be regarded the workings of a heterosexual ideology which wishes to posit itself as 'prior' or 'primary' (quite simply, normal).
It has been further argued that this 'priority' of heterosexuality requires a 'copy' to exist as prior in the Derridean sense that 'priority' (in name or quality) cannot establish itself in and of itself; it requires opposition.
Enough about that; I am unfortunately oversimplifying the problem (and likely not explaining these theories very well).
What the question I have is, might we consider a presence of 'self', some essential quality or psychic reality that predisposes the subject to enact or play multiple genders in chat-rooms? Does the performance of gender in such an anonymous and simultaneously public place give us reason to question the link between gender and sexuality?
