Moderating boards is a huge job and often screwed up.

You did good.

No, you did not need to be a friend. It is precisely that many see board moderators AS friends that makes the job so difficult. A onesided "frienship" is... therapy!!! :)

I think your own conclusion is the wisest: as moderator do not reach out, suggest courses of action, etc, but simply state and enforce rules.
