I've never looked for anything amorous online

Maybe that is the trick. I've met many people that I've got to know and care about as friends. Maybe I will go meet them sometime, maybe not. The one thing I am sure about all is they have been truthful to me (yes, I am good at knowing that). Anyone who tries public chats has to expect what they get, most people there are playing games and are not what they seem.

Go looking for friends at places (boards) that interest you, you will soon get to know people well and you will know well enough if they are truthful and trustworthy.
