I'm currently writing a project paper on Avatars. I've been working as a community manager and developer for 2 years on GFXartist.com. A project I have realised with 2 friends. A community site for people who digitally produce graphics, wallpapers, illustrations, painting and such. As part of my study (Digital Media Design, School of the Arts Utrecht, The Netherlands) I am currently writing a short project paper as 'exercize' for my thesis next year. The subject of my project paper is In wich way can avatars enhance the communication within an online digital art community site. John's articles have pushed my a great deal forward when it comes to research. The main thing that keeps floating around in my head is how visitors (or users, which is more appropriate in this case) of websites have such a ghost appearance. You visit a site daily, you know other people visit as well, their fingerprints are all over the site but you never 'see' them. They sometimes appear as a name in a 'currently online list' or something alike but everyone is faceless. You join discussions but have no idea with whom you're talking. A short user profile gives you another name and maybe an age or nationality. Any thoughts on the subject, or do you know anyone who has written down some of his/her thoughts that are related to the subject? Cheers
