I've already read through that whole article on avatars (one of the reasons that I came straight to this forum when I was looking for information) though I appreciate the help.

Here's one of the only other articles I've found on the practice. It's not surprising that it's written neither by a single author, nor by any one claiming any educational achievement. It is, however, straight from the horses' mouth, so to speak.
