Usenet: wasteland

Usenet seems to have deteriorated over the years and, personally, I believe it's at an all-time low. Is it "disinhibition" combined with "lowest common denominator" (vis-a-vis "webtv")? Is usenet, in its own way, becoming, as television did, a testament to society's base and banal nature, as a potentially valuable resource becomes a fetid cesspool? Is it the basic nature of human beings to despoil? And why doesn't anybody hang around here anymore?
Busy watching "reality t.v.?"
