I'm sure you're right that technophobia has something to do with it (as has lack of experience & people wanting to make a name for themselves). I think its too easy, tho', to blame all these kinds of things on technophobia - I think people using the Internet for social interaction challenges all our cherished ideas about the value and worth of FtF contact - so it tends to be demonized in some way.

On a light note:

As of 2/2/00 15.03 GMT the following domain names were avaliable:

www.netintoxication.com
www.netintoxication.net
www.netintoxication.org

but someone's registered www.cyberpsychology.com.
