If you are familiar with the notion of Intentional Communities (as opposed to Accidental Communities), then you can appreciate that online communities (so-called virtual communities) can be organized around a common vision or mission.

About 10 years ago, I helped found MicroMuse/MuseNet as an online learning community. We were one of the first MUDs devoted to community-building and learning, bringing children and adults together to share the joy of discovery learning within the new technology offered by the Internet.
