Indeed, sometimes it is hard getting people to participate in surveys. Have you gone into various communities to describe and recruit people for your study? It's always a good idea to first check with the leaders of the community. Some online groups are not very happy about researchers studying them. It's important to respect the privacy and wishes of the group. Have you read about the ethical issues in doing such research... for example, Amy Bruckman's work?
