Kathryn, I'm not sure I know what you are looking for, but my best guess for now is that you may possibly find some relevant information for your interests (with a plentiful bibliography with even more references and appendices with many institutes studying more or less what you refer to) in the following book:

Incidentally after reading Chapter 8 (The Hand That Rocks: The Impact of Early Emotional Deprivation), you may find it interesting to read more about control-mastery theory (in, say, Joseph Weiss's book, How Psychotherapy Works) to discover ways to connect control-mastery theory with the fascinating research reported in this chapter.
