I agree that this was an important day for your student. He was expecting to be humiliated and shamed, as perhaps he had been previously. Instead you were so matter a fact and straightforwardly used this as an opportunity to treat him in a respectful mature fashion. You minimized his shame and offered him the opportunity to get on with the project. I think that parents can at times do more harm in their attempts to help in that the attention they put on the problem can give the child the incorrect (or sometimes correct) message that the parent likes there to be a problem for them to deal with. The child may then be motivated to retain or create a symptom in the service of giving the parent what he or she thinks they want. Your students are lucky and your works sounds fascinating!
