Hi Jeanie & Jessica. Male, 61, married to a former Singaporean. Qualified as a teacher in 1960. Taught Music, Drama, Voice Production & Singing, English, History, Geography, ESL in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea & China. A member of the Professional Clinical Hypnotherapists of Australiasia. Shiatsu & Acupressure Prctitioner. I teach Taijiquan & Qigong from 6am -7am+ every morning. I met my 'taichi father' Teo Ah Keng in 1971. He was a senior student of Mr Sia Mok Tie - Grandmaster in Singapore of White Crane & Yang's Tai Chi Chuan. I Studied Yoga & Meditation with Swami Poornamurti & have read widely. Response- It is possible that 'the lady' may have thought I was reading her mind & doing magic. That thought never crossed my mind. When she beamed at me & looked so cheerful & happy I knew intuitively that she had made a break through. She saw me on the previous Friday afternoon & was fretting about going to a BBQ with her husband. The eye fixation & breathing techniques we worked through are fairly standard meditation & relaxation skills used by many hypnotherapists & meditation teachers. I recommended books on panic attacks by Bronwyn Fox -'Anxiety Attack, don't panic' & 'Power over Panic' both slim paperbacks with useful meditation exercises to learn. Dr Ainslie Meares taught his cancer patients similar skills. You mentioned 'compliance' several times. As a studio music teacher, [when I'm wearing another hat]- I expect my voice & piano students to stick with me & get the notes & interpretation as good as we can manage. With time & effort they become confident seasoned performers. When I teach the Taichi forms & sword I always demonstrate the steps & applications slowly so that students understand the importance of mastering the skills correctly, smoothly & precisely. That way they can be sure that techniques will work effectively for them. My approach to hypnotherapy is similar. I see myself as a coach teaching clients skills which seem to be appropriate for them & if they get benefit from the experience then they happy, their friends & family & workmates are happy & so am I. The mushroom soup may have been the dart that injured the client's confidence when she was a 6 year old. The fear of having 'bad manners' & being scolded for inappropriate behaviour had produced unbearable problems & inconvenience for her for 40 years. She was eager to get rid of the problem & keen to learn anything that might help. I doubt that she saw me as a proxy parent & I don't think she was trying to 'please me.' Because 'the lady' was so tense at the first session I did not attempt a standard induction & hypnotherapy session. I tested her to see if she could allow her eyelids to relax enough so that she could not open them. She couldn't. No matter we did 'waking suggestions' & 'concentration & relaxation techniques' & she seems to have had a successful outcome. I have taught 'relaxation & concentration techniques' to groups of students & adults over the years & many people have reported great benefits even after one workshop. Like most things it depends on keeping up your skillsn every day. Finally, I did say as I left the store that 'the lady' should call me if she loses confidence. She said, "I will."
A brief bio - [so that you can see where I am coming from.]
