I gave up a career to stay at home and be the best mother I could be to him and his brothers. I have risked my marriage to his stepfather and made every imaginable personal sacrifice to give him what he needed. It wasn't until I found this site that I truly had any understanding of his unspoken pain. I am torn between the "Tough Love" stance we have taken and the new knowledge I have gained of his needs. I can only hope that I can find a psychologist to work with him and that he will be agreeable to this. Hopeful, K.P.
Your letter could have been written by me. Although I do not have the mental health background you do, I have come to understand that my 17 year old son suffers tremendously from this disorder. He, too, has been living away from our home on his own. We have sought counseling, treated him for ADHD (Ritalin, years ago) and have basically hoped that "maturity" might help.
