Barry-- I can recall a book by Shel Silverstein called The Giving Tree. It depicted 'love' and giving as a one way process, with the final image of a tree that has been totally destroyed by its 'giving'. Your depiction of the self-denying, self-sacrificing mother is a bit reminescent of this. The expression of kindness, of giving, of caring can be an enriching and rewarding experience for the giver. It's a bit distressing that you left out the very real rewards of being a mother. Our society does not do much to extoll altruism, since monetary reward is seen as the ultimate sign of success and reward. -Doug
