    How to Encourage Non-compliance
Jim Pretzer · 7/19/98 at 1:22 PM ET

Think back to your last medical visit then review this list (which I use in a day-long workshop on non-compliance which I've presented to both medical and mental health audiences):

    How to Encourage Non-compliance

    • Act unfriendly, distant, unapproachable.
    • Look and act busy.
    • See patients in a chaotic setting with many interruptions.
    • Use jargon and terms foreign to the patient. Never ask if they understand.
    • Cut the patient off. Interrupt. Don't allow the patient to tell their story in their own words.
    • Ignore the patient's questions or act as though they are dumb questions.
    • Don't bother to understand the patient's ideas about their illness. Don't ask about their concerns or expectations.
    • Don't bother with a clear explanation of the diagnosis and the causes of the problem.
    • State the treatmen vaguely or in technical terms. Don't explain the rationale for this treatment regimen.
    • Don't ask for feedback. Ignore any objections the patient expresses.
    • Terminate the interview abruptly.
    • Provide little support or encouragement.

Note: In many settings, care is organized in ways than inadvertantly minimize compliance.
