Contrary to what is published by the APA and other organizations, their "opinions" deciding to "declare" homosexuality as normal were based not on a careful examination of the research and clinical literature but made solely on ideological grounds. I strongly suggest that psychologists who are interested in such mundane things as facts and data, take a look at Ronald Bayers book Homosexuality and American Psychiatry(1975) to see the political and coercive means that were used to "decide" this issues. As one prominent clinician said, before he was booed down in a session said: One doesn't do science by taking a vote!". Also to see how the public is being given misinformation about this condition. The data show quite convincingly that homosexuality is the result of disturbed relationships with both parents in certain kinds of familiy.Try reading Charles Socarides'A Freedom too Far as well as a classic bit of research Because organizations "declare" or "decide" that something is not true does not make it so.What on earth have we been going to school for if not to study the truth,to examine scientific data,to weed out fact from fiction,to eliminate preconceived notions and especially to not allow political or ideological matters to influence what we know. Finally, how come this issue, homosexuality,is the only one of a whole series of disorders that has been so politicized. The danger in this normalizing the problem is that many men who might be suffering from this condition are being told that nothing can be done;that there are no treatments(when in fact there are) borders on medical malpractice. Just as having theories about depression, alcoholism give us a road map as how to treat a condition, same hold true for male homosexuals. By the way,a careful reading of the scientific literature shows absolutely no evidence of any simple genetic causes. I wouild suggest that as practicioners and scientists,we read the research literature and not "position papers" put out by organizations whose decisions are more ideological than scientific in nature. And i am also referring to both APA's. By sticking to what we know, and formulating theories,we will best be able to help patients such as Dr.Kusch's.Better to have theories and revises them as we go along when data point us in different directions, than to automatically decide we know nothing.
I am terriby sorry that genuine scientific concerns about the pathological nature of homosexuality is creating such a fuss.
