As I think about Otto's relationship with Sally, I find myself wondering if he hates her as much as he says that his father hated his mother. His deep belief in the unreliability of women shows up in his initial comments about her feelings of guilt for having giving the impression that she might have come on to the divorced man. Has Otto internalized the shame denied by his mother in her shameless behavior both in her relationship with his father and with Otto himself? As his self esteem improves as a result of his relationship with a caring, accepting therapist (Don), I suspect his ability to own the shame of having been rejected by his parents will lessen his need to protect is fragile vulnerability with the anger that he is afraid to express.
