It has been my experience that those who call a psychotherapist after they've discussed their needs with a friend who has had a successful therapeutic experience are better at the business of human relations than those who search for a helper from a faceless directory. As I mentioned in the actual case report, Otto had looked not in the telephone book but the Medical Directory published for our geographical area. These listings give information about the age of the physician, year graduated from and name of Medical School, place of residency training, the hospitals where we have admitting privileges, and whether one is Board Certified. This is information that can give some "feel" for a psychiatrist on the basis of training, but nothing about his/her personality. It is just the place that a lawyer would look were s/he searching for what Otto really wanted---someone to give him an excuse for his offense against a colleague rather than someone who could help him live better in the world. I placed that information in this part of the case presentation in order to give the reader a subtle clue about Otto's personality. Well after the case was completed, I reflected on this datum and decided that Otto got more than he expected, and profitted far more from his treatment than he could possibly have predicted.
