It is true that we are extremly complex and that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." We do not want to be so fixated on the parts that we only see the molecules of the desk, without perceiving the desk itself. It seems to me that we need to ask of ourselves, as therapists, "why" in order to understand the people we work with, but without losing the whole person and, yet, "keeping the complexity."
