    the nature of the unconscious
    althea · 11/30/02 at 4:56 ET

This seem to be the kind of forum where I can try out a theory that has been puzzling me for some time. Just how far back can we remember? Do we remember what happened in the womb? Can it be true that the " unconscious mind" is nothing more than a string of actual memories of events that are preverbal, and thus lack an accessible language for expression other than neurosis?

I have found it useful in my work with clients to take everything they say as true to them, however fantastical it may seem. Many verbally expressed beliefs and images in the mind are metaphorical for deeper meanings, we already know that and even the idea of the unconscious is a metaphor in itself. Truth, surely is the matter for consideration in therapy?

The recent discussion on conspiracy theory is a good case in point: surely the inner conviction of truth is the energy that drives the need to understand, not a perverse desire to weave fantasies out of thin air.
