    It is the fear of abandonment that probably keeps the client from getting too close. Then, the client abandons therapy and ends up feeling abandoned anyway. the lcient abandons him/herself really. Perhaps the client has to test the therapist a bit to find out just what will happen.

    What do you mean by "too needy", that really doesn't tell us anything and it is also a judgemental sort of statement.
    What limits were set at the beginning of therapy? Are the limits consistent? Have you discussed the clients responses with him/her? How do you invite closeness? How long have you been working with this client?

    Why not discuss this with a supervisor or colleague? Sounds like you are new in this kind of work.
