Confrontation/Confrontational skills

I am busy with some research & I have come accross the subjects regarding the use of confrontation & confrontational skills. I apologise if this sounds like a simple question, but despite numerous web searches & read innumerable texts which at best, skirt the subject.
I would appreciate some detailed, & supportable information on these areas. One would assume the difference is within the context, but as assumptions are often the first step on the road to disaster, I feel it is better to ask the experts.
