Morton Hunt's book, "The Story of Psychology" (ISBN = 0385471491) is dated but still a very good start to get the background to the behavioral science aspect. It is admittedly slanted toward scientific or academic psychology rather than the clinical traditions. You would probably also want to find some sources that give a richer view of the analytic and clinical side as well, but I can't think of one in particular offhand that does as good a job with those.
