I have found managed care to be particularly harmful in the treatment of severe mental illness..I had a managed care co refuse to authourize more than eight visits for a schizophrenic on grounds that it was medically unneccessary. What happens is that the client drops out of treatment and ends up being hospitalized, costing managed care even more money than if they allowed preventive care in the name of regular therapy visits. THey shoot themselves in the foot financially and then try to blame therapists for it.. Also case managers are often not well educated about domestic violence and have tried to force a woman to engage in couples tx. with her abusive husband, causing her to be in a dangerous situation and need even more therapy and services, again, costing managed care more money. What happens is that uneducated professionals such as MBAs are in position of power and authority as CEOs and they make ignorant and harmful dicisions that hurt clients and undermine the work of therapists. There needs to be some accountability on the part of CEOs that forces them to get educated
