My original reply was somewhat garbled due to my unfamiliarity with this reply format. In essence my point was that just having a degree and training, both of which are invested with a scientific cachet, does not give one a greater objective ability to render the judgement called for with these facts.
From my own experience I lean heavily on the preferences of the child and also working with both these parents to let them see that although they may have a good deal of antipathy for eachother, their offspring shouldn't be burdened by the parent's inability to get along.
What bothers me though is the implication that a Psychologist would have some greater insight into making this kind of judgement. Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Psychotherapists (like myself), or any other profession of this ilk do not have some special knowledge that somehow puts them above their fellow humans.
