It seem to me that passion takes people in two directions. First it is an indication of our inner psychological need. The intensity of our passions can be influenced in part by our biological make up or our thought process. It is an expression of who we are as people.

Passion is an expression of need. In the one case it is being given over to that need and in the other it is an attempt to deny need. This is true if the need is something I can't meet or have approach avoidance issues, then passion can be a reaction against that need.

Passion can sometimes be a diversion from facing the painful reality of life. If people feel over whelmed by some aspect of their lives passion can be a diversion so they don't have to deal with that painful area of their lives.

For instance in the case of Jimmy Swarragert, the preacher caught with a prostitute, his passion in condemning sin was a cover to avoid dealing with his own sexual desires.
