Paul, My working diagnosis was not borderline personality disorder but rather "borderline spectrum" which describes a patient's reality testing, object relations, defense mechanisms, and identity formation. DSM IV is not particularly helpful way to think about these patients when it comes to treatment issues. I had suggested Marsha Linehann's book for Borderlines because it has very helpful skills development and self education modules for patients who want to feel better and are having trouble.
