Drug Neurobiology, Salkovskis-Martin Thread, Nature v Nurture I just read the Salkovskis-Martin thread (July 1999) regarding SSRIs v. CBT, which appeared to be very pro CBT, somewhat anti pharmaceutical, and somewhat contemptuous of the nature overrides nurture view. When it comes to a reasonably straight-forward disorder like (not too severe) OCD (fear system problem, i.e. amygdala disorder), sloppy drugs like the SSRIs, and effective CBT (i.e. extinction therapy, which pretty much bypasses higher cognition and directly affects/reprograms the amygdala, an evolutionarily old (non-cognitive) subcortical neural system), then one is left with the misleading impression that, “we are in control of our own responses.” But how about something tougher, like ADHD, and a more effective drug, like amphetamine, and no known effective cognitive/behavior therapies? Structure will help the ADHD person, but more is generally needed (see Barkley who views ADHD as a lack of self control, biologically based). Does anyone disagree that ADHD is a brain “disorder” (disease?) and a clear example of nature overriding nurture, that therapy/willpower cannot fix, but that a drug can fix? Any Comments/thoughts from those with therapy/nurture uber alles leanings would be appreciated. Fred H.
