There is an evidence-based mind/body group program designed for the treatment of somatizing, high-utilizing patients. These patients are often treated poorly in most primary care and specialty settings. The program is a somato-cognitive-behavioral approach that teaches patients how to identify symptoms that manifest mind/body interaction and to change the behaviors that put them at risk for these symptoms. The program, the Personal Health Improvement Program, or PHIP, was developed at Harvard Community Health Plan in the 1980's. There are six published outcome studies that support its claims to offer both clinical and cost-effectiveness. The program is now offered by Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare in Eastern Massachusetts, and by Mertech, Inc, throughout the USA. There are over twenty organizations offering PHIP to their patients. More information about the program can be found at http://www.mindbodymedicine.org. Steven Locke, MD
