Choice of Line, Colour and Subject Matter

Hi all,

Can anyone offer me any advise, literature, mentors etc... on how to interpret the choice of colour, style of lines and choice of subject matter in the art of a 4 to 6 year old child?

Does anyone have any good ideas of how to test a 4 to 6 child's ability to communicate emotion through art? A few ideas have come to mind but border on unethical, I am trying to come up with a productive, ethical, test method.

Any help would be very much appreciated!
