    Stage Theory in Individual Psychology?
    Craig Tucker · 05/30/01 at 12:35 ET

Adler had much to say about child development and how to create the optimal environment for development of social interest but he seemed to avoid identifying specific stages. On the other hand Freud and his offspring have gone to great lengths to identify epigenesis of personality development. Just wondering about what others think about this difference. Is my perception of the issue wrong? Has Adler actually developed a stage theory of his own?

It seems to make since to me that he would not develop a stage theory because a stage theory would imply a specific course for all and denies the creative power of the individual to take the same developmental elements and plot a different way. Generally, a stage theory seems to hold together, but when looked at individually, there is large variation in development and associated tasks.
