Psychology Education in Medicine
Medical eduation can be considerably improved by the addition of course work in psychology that emphasizes treating the patient as a mental/emotional/physical totality. Alfred Adler's teaching are especially useful in the interpretation and treatment of physical and emotional symptoms. A valuable book on this subject is "Lectures to Physicians and Medical Students: Volume 8 of The Collected Clinical Works of Alfred Adler" available at http://www.Adlerian.us/cwaa-v8.htm or www.Amazon.com.

Re: Psychology Education in Medicine
I may be old but I don't think things have changed. The psychology taught to medical students in Canada, remains sterile and mechanistic. It is based on the psychiatric model with the attendant benefits to the pharmaceutical industry. The emphasis remains on the DSM classification notion. All human problems in this model are due to neurotransmitter anomalies which can be addressed, not by correcting wrong thinking, but by applying neurotransmission corrections by drugs. It is a sad state of affairs filled with despair.

Re: Psychology Education in Medicine
It is a sad state of affairs, but things are changing, so move away from that notion of despair! I was at the American Holistic Medical Association's Conference this month in Cleveland, Ohio. The room was filled with doctors and practitioners from the US and Canada who know there is a better way. We will reach the tipping point, and common sense will win.
A note: the first link to Adler's book is nonfunctional. |

Re: Psychology Education in Medicine
That is good news! It is fascinating to get reports of medical and psychological limitations and improvements from my students in different countries.
I've fixed the link. Thank you for the alert. |
