Question A New Religion

I loved the ideas of emergent networks since reading Barabasi's Linked in 2002 and, it seems, a century before learning yesterday from Wiki that Imre Brody, a Hungarian, invented krypton bulbs and did basic research with the physicist, Max Born. Imre Brody was killed by fascists in 1944...I was two years old, my father, orphaned near his first birthday, would have been 28.

Not only was Imre Brody Hungarian, so is Albert Barabási and a squad of other researchers in emergent networks, including Alfréd Rényi and Paul Erdös who pioneered research in random (non emergent) graphs (collections of points and connections between them).

Imre Brody, a relative? Maybe but maybe not. I also learned today, thanks to Wiki, that "Brody" is a town of 23,000 in the Ukraine, dates back to about 1050, and is about 70% Jewish. ("Brody" is a Hungarian name that means "from Brody"!)

Five minutes gave me a new nationality, home town, and religion and let me know that my choosing six months ago to study Czech was off by a border!

I want to believe that my religious skepticism, interest in middle Europe, and hobbiest zeal for physics is coincidence. At the same time, I'm shaken. I'm proud. And still a kid from middle America who thought his father was Irish. What would my Polish mother and her alcoholic relatives - probably all Catholics once upon a time - have thought?
