Default Brainy Cities: Race & Death?

De Catanzaro (1981) argued that, in the absence of observed suicide in other critters, that a threshold intelligence was essential to self-destruction. (Not sure that I believe his data or his conclusion on this point.) BizJournals listed the 54 smartest cities in the United States. (Philadelphia was about 5th from the bottom! Austin was near the top.)

A) The top 10 brainiest U.S. cities based on the number of adults with bachelor's degrees:
1. Seattle, Washington
2. San Francisco, California
3. Austin, Texas
4. Colorado Springs, Colorado
5. Minneapolis, Minnesota
6. Charlotte, North Carolina
7. San Diego, California
8. Washington, D.C.
9. Portland, Oregon
10. Albuquerque, New Mexico

B) Martin Voracek finds, in a survey of 85 countries, a positive correlation between IQ and suicide rates.

C) Colt devotes considerable attention to low rates of suicide in black communities despite economic conditions that should be, based on international data, associated with higher rates of suicide. He makes the further point that the absence of mental health services could be seen as a protective factor against suicide in the inner cities.
"It would be of interest" to correlate academic achievement with suicide rates and racial mixture in American cities...
