Mark Steyn: Outsourcing the Future

I went to a Temple - my first time in one - last Wednesday and listened and watched in several directions as Mark Steyn spoke on "Outsourcing the Future: The Western World's Historic Gamble." (Steyn, of course, wrote America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It , and was sponsored Wednesday by the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, CAMERA.) He got a prolonged standing ovation from all five hundred of us - a roughly equal mix of God's chosen people and every one else - before he said a word! There is background: a CNN special on "God's Jewish Warriors" (see www.camera.org) compared jihadists to Christians and Jews and found no differences! CNN later apologized for its errors. Nutty George had earlier thrown another match on this fire when he explained that the Palestinians and Israelis can only achieve their goals by helping each other - a peculiar bit of gibberish since one side wants its borders secure and the other side wants the first out of existence.

The big picture:
1) The West has a spectacular demographic decline
2) Many European nations no longer resist jihadist invasions.
3) Free-lance technology assures nuclear arsenals for many small, unpredictable regimes.
4) The last sixty years of relative peace has been without precedent.
5) Sustaining societies are associated with strong religious presence. (Mormons make children as reliably as Muslims! See American Alone . The American south not only thrives with fundamentalism but also with a culture of honor wherein, so far, females make children and males help to rear them.) Secularism waits with its believers for the undertaker.

Examples:
1) Some Brit females have sterilized themselves in order to save the planet; Moslem females each average about six children. As Steyn explained, "Think globally, sterilize locally!"
2) A matter of "will": retiring Tony Blair commented that Europe will lose its contest with Islam not from a lack of will. Forty percent of UK children do not speak English as their first language and "Mohammed" will soon be the most common name given to young males in the UK. Australia recently threw John Howard out of office, New Zealand abolished its Air Force, and Canada decided that its military will not participate in combat operations. While the most literate disarm, the barbarians ramp up for war .
3) Note that Italy, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Germany, Greece, and Russia have falling populations and are below the point of demographic resurrection. Canada, France, and the UK have rising populations through the arrival of Muslims. Norway imports Pakistani in order to keep its population level.

Further, Islam recruits terrorists from disaffected secular males: it is no longer unusual to hear "Death to the Great Satan!" in a Yorkshire accent. (This recruiting has gone on for years within the United States in prisons and in Ghettos. jb)

Europe has taken a large gamble: like the script for a Broadway show, its possible to change the cast without changing the story. Replace Poles, Germans, French, and Celts with immigrants who will fund the entitlement programs! (The United States has taken a similar path. jb) History, however, does not stand still and any who ignore its trends will go away.

Q&A: (from a list of a dozen)
1) "The Scots would never put up with this nonsense." Steyn replied that the builders, architects, engineers, and skull-crackers from the last generation are gone. Glascow, for example, now has a lower life expectancy (42 years) than many countries in Africa. It's economy is entirely socialists and supported by government jobs and the town's council explores importing Islam immigrants from south Britain.
2) "Will Islam settle down after it discovers the benefits of a secularism and a rational life?" Islam is being transformed but in the opposite direction: the peaceful groups have been displaced by jihadists.
3) What is the role of western dependence on imported oil? The Saudis recently bought six billion worth of Citicorp and already own a substantial percentage of the United States.

My Own Thoughts:
1) Apoptosis: Viktor Frankl noticed that Auschwitz prisoners, given a choice between an extra ration of soup or cigarettes, predicted their own suicide when they chose a cigarette. Man, like a growing neuron, must have a connection with his future and, like the neuron, he dies when he finds none. Suicide comes from within.
2) Shelby Steele (White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era ) makes a careful argument that a) slavery destroyed white moral authority, b) blacks found it simpler to advance their position by blaming whites, c) as a result blacks continued to fail instead of taking personal responsibility. I agree with the phenomenon of White Guilt but not Steele's explanation! White Guilt still with us and in many forms: as Steyn noted, obelisks all over Europe proclaim "Never again" but in reference to never again having a fuhrer or duce. Could it be that White Guilt is a "swarm" phenomenon as much as secularism or religious fundamentalism? And how much does it cost us to throw a quarter in every empty palm or, when confronted by rage, throw another quarter? Further, will there be a "Black Guilt" that benefits Mexicans? Or will the Mexicans merely climb the ladder designed for blacks, used mostly by white females, and displace blacks?
3) Major corporations don't care about national beliefs so long as cash is assured. Microsoft, for example, sold its source code only to the Chinese, Yahoo set up an Internet that keeps offensive material out of China, and Wal-Mart forces its suppliers to buy from China. There is no difference with Islam's leaders: both act in a Darwinian way, emergent organizations that use their products - electronic chips or Imams - to take money from the sheep and keep order among them.
4) Secularists take a free ride from the fundamentalists. According to Steyn, the United States recently had a fertility rate at the cusp for maintaining its traditional population. Recent news is not good: sixty percent of young females do not want to have children (sixty percent of males do). Women in many parts of this nation depend on believers (often Southerners) to make babies: a lot of those young bitches need to have an appointment in the delivery room nine months from today or else be deported on a plane out of Logan.

And a gift:
I had a copy of America Alone with me and remarked that my audience at a recent Assn. for Politics and the Life Sciences meeting were surprised by Steyn's demographics. (Steyn was surprised by their surprise!) I tucked my book, now autographed, under my arm and threaded my way out past signs that required males to cover their heads and to leave cameras at home. (Both rules were ignored.) I read Steyn's autograph several days later: "Jim, let's win!"
