Emergent Networks in a Lotus 7
Power Laws in a Lotus Seven
Power laws describe sociality between fish, termites, and neurons: they also describe it between earthquakes: that is, one or two participants are connected to nearly everyone but the vast majority of participants have between one and three connections. The "hub" grows because it establishes recruiting criteria for the rest of the network. ATP, for example, is a hub in cellular metabolism, Billy Clinton is a hub in democrat politics, and so are Walmart and Microsoft within their respective empires. Charles Murray in Human Accomplishment introduces the hubs within human science. I found what appear to be power laws in hood of a Lotus Super 7. The car is a street legal go cart on steroids. It weighs about 1100 pounds, accelerates to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, and stops within 120 feet. They are so agile that they are barred in most competitions unless they race against each other. The early 7s had a Cosworth 1500 CC engine (fathered by Costin and by Duckworth). The 7s still have full roll cages but no doors, side screens, or roofs. The driver and navigator sit four inches above the asphalt and four inches in front of the differential. (One buyer's asking about a radio was a thigh-slapper for the sales staff.) Evolution, however, has changed things a bit...as always. "The engine is a1500 cc with extensive modification and requires the use of high octane (racing) fuel. A stock cylinder head casting is included to enable extended street driving on pump gas. Engine modifications include: Bored to 1558 cc's, approx. 13 to 1 compression. Twin Weber 40 DCOE carburetors. Dave Bean "Atlanta" cam, steel lifters, titanium retainers, oversize valves, steel rocker shaft pedestals, combustion chamber work, Balanced crank, steel main bearing caps, high strength bolts, aluminum flywheel. Wet sump, with "trap door" baffles and windage screen, high pressure oil pump, thermostatically controlled oil cooler. Oversize radiator with high efficiency electric fan and aluminum catch tank. Mallory distributor with optical pick up, Crane HI-6 electronic ignition with adjustable progressive rev limiter, and dashboard adjustable timing, Crane "fireball" coil. www.texasmotorworks7.com/racoca1.html" |
