Economy of Bees
Economists, as if surgeons with paddle-shockers who don't know where the heart is, throw money to multiple organizations. The metaphor of one-cause thinking about machines appears even in remarks about "jump starting the economy."
The economy, however, is not merely a machine but a superorganism whose members exert self-interest and move in synchony with each other. Biology tells us that termites behave according to the termite next to them. This simple strategy for termites makes palaces with multiple chambers and air conditioning in a Darwinian way that, for men, eventually produced cathedrals from huts. Thus, a few simple rules direct swarms of 'boids but no one understands that Americans, Europeans, and even Gladwell's savvy Chinese act according to whether they trust the American, European, or Chinese whom they encounter next to them or on television, at the bank, at the realty office, or in the Congress. The economy may recover faster if Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Frankie Raines, Jimmy Johnson, Donna Gorelick, and even BHO face consequences for smarmy conduct. It could also be that we now all recognize the "market" as a Ponzi scheme and that things are forever changed for the better...
