Language: The most important tool in therapy
When I hear clinicians and psychiatrists refer to clients as "bipolar, schizophrenic, an Axis II", I cringe. When someone has cancer, we don't say "she's a cancer". So why do we say "she's a schizophrenic" or "he's bipolar". Our language sets clients up to believe they are their disease, and we only see the pathology. When we start to change our language, we might see an interesting change in the treatment process. We are touting the importance of strength and client based treatment. I wonder how many clinicians know how to truly integrate this in a treatment approach. It all begins with the language we use.
