Question Complex PTSD and "Core Beliefs"

From the explanation at the beginning of this forum, I understand that part of EMDR is to replace negative beliefs (I am bad/dirty/worthless) with more positive ones (I am worthy/good). Have you had success with treating complex PTSD wherein the same (or very similar) negative messages have been instilled by several different trauma experiences?

Default Re: Complex PTSD and "Core Beliefs"

When you say complex PTSD I am wondering if you mean dissociative disorder. The treatment of core beliefs in a dissociative client is quite different from adult onset PTSD even when it is made complex by multiple traumas.

Addressing core beliefs in dissociative clients is complex and involves a period of stabilization and containment and accessing the self system. After that, formative traumatic experience can be targeted wtih PTSD. After a time, core beliefs shift. Cognitive behavior therapy is part of the treatmnt, but it is made complex by the fact that child parts of self are not typically directly modifiable by cognitive restructuring, but through a combination of ego state therapy and detoxificaton of trauma.

When traumatic member is detoxified in a dissociative client, the developmental arrests get unlocked and the client becomes free to shift cognitions including core ones about worth.

If your question is about adult-onset PTSD from multiple traumas, the answer is a more straightforward "yes."

Is there more to your question?
