1) The New York meeting - Free Speech in an Age of Jihad on April 10th - had no Bardot - damn! - but plenty of like-minded complainers who write for their living and their legacy and are losing both in court actions initiated by Islamists. Mark Steyn, for example, faces three legal challenges before Canadian "human rights commissions" for the data and conclusions he offers in America Alone. (His wit and popularity may well rally Canadian opinion so strongly that the human rights commissions find their authority sharply reduced.) Ezra Levant, another Canadian, faces similar difficulties. Rachel Ehrenfeld published in America where there are relatively few restrictions on free speech but was tied into knots by a case in London brought by a sheik to a sympathetic court. The sheik was "offended" by the twenty copies of Ehrenfeld's book sold in the UK.

Bottom line: in times of internationally distributed assets, one complaint in Sumatra sends tremors to New York because Islamists find favorable courts in which to bring legal action. The folks who would cut off our heads silence us by our own rules.

2) I heard of "Sharia-compliant business practices": that is, large investment companies hire Sharia experts to advise investments. The expectation that few discuss: a Sharia-compliant venture means acceptance not only of Sharia financial practices but social ones as well. There is said to be a "DOW Islamic Index" and the financial impact is roughly 8 billion dollars.

3) The FBI Director relies heavily on Steve Coughlin for advice after removing Gordon England. Coughlin is said to be more sympathetic to Islamist motives and trains FBI agents in correct interpretations of Muslim conduct.

4) There is less surprise that entire families have moved into protective custody, not in Holland but in the United States!

5) The United Nations, dominated by Islamic countries, encourages restrictions on freedom of expression.

In a room at the NY Princeton Club, the audience of 300 heard from Andrew McCarthy (author of Willful Blindness: Memoir of the Jihad., Robert Spencer, Robert May, Rachel Ehrenfeld, Ezra Levant, Frank Gaffney, Steven Emerson, Jay Nordlinger, and the honorable Robert Bork. These are smart, seasoned, and sometimes scarred or scared, people. The major topics were "Libel Tourism and Political Correctness," "Suppressing Discussion of Islam," and "What is to be done? Legislative Opportunities and Pitfalls." Mark Steyn, under obvious duress as a key player, spoke about "The Dimming of Liberty: Legal Jihad and the Criminalization of Resistance."

Evolution?

1) Calls from starlings, wolves, lions, chimps, and crickets announce territories and the larger the territory, the more females are attracted to nest within it and the more eggs that Mr. clearthroat will fertilize. A similar truth applies to calls from Imams, rants from black ideologues from their pulpits, and the fire and brimstone from tradtional Presbyterians. And modern technology amplifies the ability of one contender to dominate a larger territory: Hitler might have remained a minor Austrian nuisance except for the gifts from radio and film! Islam understands well and applies these evolutionary truths although under different labels. That is, nonbelievers are tolerated but dissenters are executed: terminate their territorial signals! (Dick Wrangham tells of "chimp patrols" that raid isolate males from neighboring troops: the raid starts by ripping out the voice box and testicles of their target!)

2) I confessed at the lunch table, after scarfing up a portobello decorated with a slice of chicken and then cutting into a delicious tender bird that might have been a pigeon in the park when the sun came up. And I was surprised that the three-piece suit next to me responded positively when I said: "The unmentioned, unmentionable fact is that average Mideast IQ is about 75. Power-law (fat tail) distributions for IQ mean that there are plenty of brilliant people for leadership slots and zillions of soldiers who follow instinct, react impulsively, react aggressively, and swarm easily. And the interaction between environments and genes are such that one generation of abuse and suppression makes it more likely that succeeding generations will also engage in those behaviors. Things will not change with Islam until that cycle is broken." (How do we get omega-3s into a billion Islamic males?)

He took it well and admitted his enjoying Charles Murray's making similar points two weeks earlier but the apple pie and ice cream ended the thread in our talk.

The afternoon panel reinforced my lunch thoughts: rows of lawyers advocated high-verbal, high maternal-imprint tactics against people who respect "the strong horse," mastered their religious lessons but not much math or creative writing, and probably have good dental enamel. Steyn understands how short time is and the nature of the cancers that invade us. As for Bardot, she's wrinkled up and in France but in the fight...

3) The West that survives will do so by means of smaller neighborhoods, prompt consequences for nasty conduct, and absolute protection for freedom of speech no matter which cleric thinks his gods are offended.

Mark Steyn, rambunctious, brilliant author of America Alone was hit by Islamist complaints to three of Canada's "Human Rights Commissions." The globalists, the one-worlders, would see these Commissions as necessary tools for the removal of differences. Sharansky is right: the true threat to the West is from its desire to erase itself. Toynbee would talk about suicide; I would mention apoptosis.

"As was perfunctorily reported on Thursday, the Canadian "Human Rights" Commission, one of three HRCs to which Islamists took Maclean's magazine for having published Mark Steyn, has self-protectively dismissed the case before it could come to tribunal. The Ontario HRC had previously dismissed it: but with an outrageous statement from its chief commissioner, Barbara Hall, to the effect that Maclean's was guilty of publishing "hate," nonetheless. She regretted that her commission had no mandate to try the case, but looked forward to a time when this mandate would be extended.

"A British Columbian 'human rights' tribunal did, however, decide that it had jurisdiction over what a Toronto-based magazine could publish, and the show trial against Maclean's continues there, with judgement awaited. The Alberta HRC continues to try Ezra Levant and his Western Standard magazine (now defunct in print) -- in proceedings that have gone on for more than two years. The Canadian HRC has taken 16 months in preliminary consideration of the case a gay activist brought against the small Toronto-based Catholic Insight magazine. Indeed: prolonged and arbitrary delays appear to be part of the method by which the HRCs bleed their respondents dry with legal and other expenses."
