Suicide & Conformity: Churchill on Jewish Persecution

This essay, attributed to Churchill in 1937 illustrates the evolutionary balance between being different and moving to the edge of a swarm or herd and becoming a target for predators in the center of the swarm or at its periphery. (Paranoia and independence often hold hands!) Howard Bloom's Global Brain discusses "diversity generators" and "conformity enforcers." Churchill's essay also fits well with my own thoughts in one chapter of "Rebels, Deviants, & Individualists," on the causes of suicide.

There is a second point: the United States faces invasion by two cultures: the Mexican and the Muslim. I earlier summarized Breznitz's description of immune tactics: that is, a tiny invasion triggers no response, an overwhelming one triggers collapse, and one in between leads to organized resistance. Western Europe, the UK, and the United States are now in the second category. Britain, at the start of the Second World War, faced a big invasion from Germany and a middle sized one from those who escaped Germany.

The irony: kindness and tolerance encourage invaders, the formation of enclaves, and the collapse of the original civilization. There is also the odd phenomenon of those who came to America to escape tyranny being followed here by the same tyrants they once fled. (If you've ever been trained as a slave or a soldier, it's easy to fall back into the ranks!) The Jews must feared German pursuit into the UK in the 1930s. And in an all too human emergent event, a gift from Heaven's Department of Practical Jokes, Britain developed a "gift" for them of land in Palestine.

And the joker: women want smarter males and males will take on a slightly dumber female. The average Ashkenazim, however, is often 10 points smarter than the average Brit. While guys might play around, women would have to settle for less than what they want and what good Jewish girl would do that?!!

I first heard of this tempest at 6:30 AM from a local talk show, Michael Smerconish, WPHT AM radio, 3/14/07.

The gist: Richard Toye, a Cambridge historian has a new book to push, one that contains an article by Winston Churchill in 1937 but one never published. Churchill praises the Jews creativity, work ethic, and patriotism but also questions if their refusal to meld contributes to their persecution.

In reference to Jewish persecution: "'It would be easy to ascribe it to the wickedness of the persecutors...but...it exists even in lands, like Great Britain and the United States, where Jew and Gentile are equal in the eyes of the law, and where large numbers of Jews have found, not only asylum, but opportunity...These facts must be faced in any analysis of anti-Semitism. They should be pondered especially by the Jews themselves. For it may be that, unwittingly, they are inviting persecution - that they have been partly responsible for the antagonism from which they suffer...The central fact which dominates the relations of Jew and non-Jew is that the Jew is 'different'. He looks different. He thinks differently. He has a different tradition and background. He refuses to be absorbed.'

"Elsewhere...it is clear Churchill disapproves of their persecution...'In fact, the Jew is as a rule a good citizen. He is sober, industrious, law-abiding. He identifies himself - up to a point - with the country in which he lives. He is ready, if need be, to fight and to die for it. Jewish soldiers served in the armies both of the Allies and of the Central Powers during the Great War. Twelve thousand of them died for Germany.'

"And Churchill ends by urging the British people to stand up for the Jews. 'The Jews are suffering from persecutions as cruel, as relentless and as vindictive as any in their long history,'...'There is no virtue in a tame acquiescence in evil. To protest against cruelty and wrong, and to strive to end them, is the mark of a man. And when the victim of oppression is a brother in blood and faith, to attempt his succour becomes a sacred duty.'"
