Re: Charlotte Allen: Gossip about Sex

I guess that depends on what is meant by "dominate". If men fully dominated, wouldn't they be sending the women out to conquer the world for them or die trying?

I think it's more like women set...

Re: World's Largest Beaver Dam

Always the engineer, I think that the dam building is a large part of child rearing; they need a stable water level to keep the entry to their lodge underwater (lest they and theirs be eaten) while...

Re: Wright's Evolution of God

Very well put, Jim. I plead ignorance, too, and will bow with the best of them if he sends some angels down in flaming chariots.

I might still be a bit skeptical, though, if the flaming...

Re: Women Swarm Onward

This is a rather good example of picking-and-choosing data for maximum effect. They could have shown the percentages of math&science degrees instead of all degrees. They could have discussed why only...

Re: The Death of Taxonomy and Systematics ?

That's certainly true. But, in answer to your question, "Can't we study both?", how many thousands of dollars are you willing to spend out of your own pocket for an entomologist to pick apart nearly...

Re: The Death of Taxonomy and Systematics ?

In a land of infinite wealth, sure. It's not something I'm willing to pay for (I know how much easier it is to use someone else's money to pay for something I'd like).

I'd rather a more casual...

Re: UPDATE ON FRED HUSSEY

If it's sooner, at least you'll know which of us is right. The upside for you is that you won't know if you're wrong. Godspeed, be it soon or, better yet, in decades.

Re: More than a kiss...

OK, I can see why you'd want to stop the reductionism at a point where you don't get bogged down in details, especially inscrutible ones. I'll maintain my assertion that behavior itself is determined...

Re: More than a kiss...

What of behavior is not driven by genes? Yours, to me, is a moot point; mutations change behavior, including tendencies to mimicry, curiosity, etc. and these mutations are either advantageous or not....

Re: Matt Ridley: Darwin Everywhere but...

Nonsense. Utter nonsense.

If you have a better theory, let's say magic, all you have to do is conjure up some and prove that evolution through natural selection did not cause speciation. Simple...

Re: Matt Ridley: Darwin Everywhere but...

Perhaps, to you, "seem" to think is correct. I don't think that at all.

RNA transcribes DNA and provides a template where amino acids line up and out pops a protein. A protein is very ordered....

Yes, the EMP will travel through the "hundreds of large transformers that distribute power throughout the U.S." but I don't think it will "permanently destroy" them:

Doesn't this argue the opposite? If they've "noticed a very low level of [solar flare] activity", shouldn't we be worried about global cooling?

My thought is that the propensity is an aversion to unanswerable curiosity, so it's good to hand the unknown over to a 'known', and for herding, so it's good to hang with a social...

Yet more evidence. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=D25A15F4-E7F2-99DF-3238208B0D11D7AB&sc=I100322 says:
