Gambling

Hello Stephen;

Just had my first client with a major problem in Gambling - spends everything he earns.

I chose direct suggestion and endevoured to offer the client positive suggestions regarding the benefits of stopping gambling; similar to smoking.

So far the client has reduced the level of gambling over the first two sessions; but doesn't seem confident about completely giving up.

I am not sure where to go next? May I ask you for some ideas regarding the therapeutic stratagy going forward?

Thank you Stephen

Andre

Hi,
It is not all about the reduction of a symptom, remember. Long ago - 200+ years - a French physician pointed out that a symptom is the mind's way of of resolving a problem it can't otherwise solve. What I am saying is, you must address what the dynamic that is going on. Is this person destroying him or herself to get even with mon and dad? Is this person certain that he or she is unlovable? Etc. Aim at unraveling that next. And too, keep helping the person find joy without the flashing lights and drinks of the Casino!
